To advance in spiritual life these things are essential, tapasya. TAPASYA MEANS VOLUNTARILY ACCEPTING SOMETHING WHICH MAY BE PAINFUL. Just like we are recommending no illicit sex, no gambling, no meat-eating. So those who are accustomed to these bad habits, for them, in he beginning it may be a little difficult. But in spite of becoming difficult, one has to do it. That is called tapasya. To rise early in the morning, those who are not practiced, it is a little painful, but one has to do it. So this is called tapasya. So according to the Vedic injunction, there are some tapasyas that must be done. It is not, “I may do it or not do it.” It must be done. Just like in the Mundaka Upanisad it is ordered that one must go to the spiritual master. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet. So there is no question of voluntarily, but it must be. And one must carry out by the order of a spiritual master and the order of the sastra. That is called tapasya. JUST LIKE IN OUR LINE EKADASI IS COMPULSORY. Positional Astronomy: Sidereal Time

Which stars are on your local meridian?
It depends on the time at which you observe.
In fact, it depends on both the date and the (clock) time,
because the Earth is in orbit around the Sun.

Consider the Earth at position E 1 on the diagram.
The star shown is on the meridian at midnight by the clock.
But three months later, when the Earth reaches position E 2 ,
the same star is on the meridian at 6 p.m. by the clock.

Our clocks are set to run (approximately) on solar time (sun time).
But for astronomical observations, we need to use sidereal time (star time).

Consider the rotation of the Earth relative to the stars.
We define one rotation of Earth as one sidereal day ,
measured as the time between two successive meridian passages of the same star.
Because of the Earth's orbital motion, this is a little shorter than a solar day.
(In one year, the Earth rotates 365 times relative to the Sun,
but 366 times relative to the stars.
So the sidereal day is about 4 minutes shorter than the solar day.)

We define Local Sidereal Time (LST) to be 0 hours
when the vernal equinox is on the observer's local meridian.
One hour later,
the local Hour Angle (LHA) of the equinox is +1h (by the definition of Hour Angle),
and the Local Sidereal Time is 1h.
So at any instant, Local Sidereal Time = Local Hour Angle of the vernal equinox.

Here's an alternative definition:
suppose that LST = 1h.
This means that the vernal equinox has moved 15° (1h) west of the meridian,
and now some other star X is on the meridian.
But the Right Ascension of star X is the angular distance from the vernal equinox to X = 1h = LST.
So at any instant, Local Sidereal Time = Right Ascension of whichever stars are on the meridian .

And in general, the Local Hour Angle of a star = Local Sidereal Time - RA of the star.

However, at any instant,
different observers, to the east or west, will have different stars on their local meridians.
We need to choose one particular meridian to act as a reference point we choose Greenwich.

We define the Greenwich Hour Angle of X
as the Hour Angle of X relative to the celestial meridian at Greenwich .
Then we can define Greenwich Sidereal Time (GST)
as the Greenwich Hour Angle of the vernal equinox.
This gives the important relation
LST = GST - longitude west .

Recall that the Local Hour Angle (LHA) of a star = Local Sidereal Time - RA of the star.
In particular, the Greenwich Hour Angle (GHA) of a star = Greenwich Sidereal Time - RA of the star.
Combining these, we find
LHA(star) = GHA(star) - longitude west .

At midnight on 1998 February 4th,
Local Sidereal Time at St.Andrews was 8h45m.
St.Andrews has longitude 2°48'W.
What was the Local Hour Angle of Betelgeuse (R.A. = 5h55m) at midnight?

Barycentric Julian Date

The solution to this problem is to calculate the time the light from a given object would have arrived at a non-accelerating reference frame. Historically, we have used the Heliocentric Julian Date (HJD), referenced to the center of the Sun because it is easy to compute. However, the Sun moves due to the gravitational pull of the planets, which introduces errors as large as 8 seconds. To correct for this, we use the Barycentric Julian Date (BJD), which is referenced to the Solar System Barycenter (SSB), or the center of mass of the Solar System, and does not accelerate (for all intents and purposes).

Note: Assuming you observe from the geocenter is much easier, but introduces a

20 ms error (R_earth/c) -- the time it takes light to get from the surface of the Earth to the center of the Earth.

The other part of the time stamp depends on the time standard we use, or how our clock ticks.

Universal Time (UT1) is based on the length of the mean solar day (the average time it takes for the Sun to arrive at the same place it was the day before). This is roughly 24 hours, but it speeds up and slows down with the changing rotation rate of the Earth. Generally, the Earth's rotation rate is slowing down due to the tidal braking of the Moon, and days are becoming longer (each year is about 1 second longer than the year 1900 was).

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is fundamentally based on atomic clocks, but it is not allowed to differ from UT1 by more than 0.9 seconds. When the difference gets too large, we add a leap second to UTC. Therefore, UTC is discontinuous and drifts with respect to "uniform" atomic time. UTC is the international standard for broadcasting time, and so most clocks are in UTC (modulo time zones and daylight savings time).

Note: Universal Time (UT) can refer to UT1, UTC, or many other variants which can differ by up to 0.9 seconds. Be sure you know which one you are using if 1 second accuracy is important.

Barycentric Dynamical Time (TDB) takes into account Relativity -- the fact that moving clocks tick at different rates. As the Earth moves, our atomic clocks actually change rates. TDB is a truly uniform time, as we would measure it on Earth if it were not moving around the Sun or being pulled by the Moon and other celestial bodies.

The BJD can be specified in any time standard, and there has been much ambiguity as to which standard is used for a particular BJD. The Barycentric Dynamical Time (TDB) is the best to use in practice, though many use UTC, which is discontinous and drifts with respect to a uniform time standard. Always specify the time standard of your BJD, and never compare BJDs in different time standards, which may differ by more than 1 minute.

There are other things that affect the arrival time of photons at the

1 ms level, which are discussed in our (more technical) paper, along with a more detailed explanation of the above. If you have made use of this calculator (or the source code) in a scientific paper, please cite it.

Lastly, we provide a tool for observers to do the reverse correction. That is, given the BJD_TDB of a future event, what UTC time on my computer clock should I observe it? However, most will find that +/- 10 minute accuracy is enough to schedule observations, and can simply use BJD_TDB

Our php code calls our IDL code and makes use of routines written by Craig Markwardt. We find the position of the Barycenter using JPL's DE405 ephemeris and the positions of spacecraft via telnet to HORIZONS.

“Losing” Two Hours Per Month

The earth’s orbit around the sun has an interesting effect on the location of the stars. It changes from night to night. If you were to go outside every evening at a particular time, say 10:00 p.m., you would notice that the stars have shifted slightly to the west from where they were the previous evening at that time. The earth’s motion around the sun has caused a slight change in our perspective. For this reason, each night stars rise roughly four minutes earlier than they did the previous night. (This is why it takes slightly less than 24 hours for the stars to make a complete cycle.)

For example, suppose you see a bright star rise at 11:30 p.m. on January 1. The next night, that same star will rise at 11:26 p.m. After one week, on January 8, that same star will rise about a half hour earlier (around 11:00 p.m.) than it did the previous week.

This effect adds up and means that stars rise two hours earlier per month.

So the star that you saw rise at 11:30 p.m. on January 1 will rise at 9:30 p.m. on February 1. This explains why the constellations look different in the winter evening sky than they do in the summer evening sky.

Constellations that appear in the summer evening are found in the morning sky during winter. After one year, the stars are back to their original position—they rise at the same time they did one year earlier.

The next time you are out on a clear night, look up and notice where the stars are. And remember to thank God for the consistent and clockwork precision with which He upholds His universe.
